FOOD REVIEW: I EAT A CARNIVOROUS PITCHER PLANT

Hi foodies,

Truly, Asia is a place with varieties of cuisine and food.  We have food that some find it hard to stomach.  Food ingredients such as sea cucumber is deemed as one of the greatest food for beauty and staying young but the looks may make some run to the nearest exit.

Today, I am eating carnivorous Pitcher plants lemang which looks more like lunch fit for Tarzan. I bought it to try for science and to show my love of Asian food 😅.  So if I don't have any new post after this, it means that I had probably died a horrifying death.  Honestly, who are not terrified after watching all those hungry gross plant eating horror movies and now eating one?????

Pitcher plant refers to species of Nepenthes and the Sarraceniaceae with about 170 species.  It is characterized by the pitfall traps which look like pitcher with a closure at the top.  It lures insects into the pitcher trap with sweet nectar and then drown the insect with the liquid which is called phytotelmata.  Yup, basically I am eating a bug trap plant.

Just like the Pokemon Victreebel and Bellsprout it is a genuinely terrifying looking thing. However, it recently became a really popular as one of the traditional dish served during Hari Raya Puasa(a festival) to replace Lemang which is a traditional food made of glutinous rice, coconut milk, salt which is cooked in a hollowed bamboo stick lined with banana leaves. It is also a food eaten by the Bidayuh in Sarawak.

I think the one I have here is the Nepenthes species. I am not sure how this one look like in reality since it would means I need to go deep into the tropical forest to hunt for one 😓😰 . That is if I am not abducted by some forest aliens or eaten by wild beasts first.

Anyway, here inside this cooked Pitcher plant glutinous rice lemang.  Hopefully this one has not become graveyard to too many insects or bugs.😰

Inside is the glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk and salt.  It is easily removed by just cutting it with a knife or I can just tear the skin out like a Hulk.

It tastes the same as glutinous rice with coconut milk wrapped with banana leaves.  If you served it to me without the pitcher plant, I won't even know that it is cooked inside this carnivorous plant.  The glutinous rice is delicious on its own and it would be even better with chicken curry. The glutinous rice is soft with smell of banana leaves.  There is no bitterness in it.  I would eat it again if I am able to find it again because it is a rare traditional food.  I do need those magic spell from Harry Potter to remove that particular strands of nightmare memories from watching too much plant eating human movies.

So, the next time you are in South East Asia and you are lucky to come across this pitcher plant glutinous rice is around, do try it out.  It is sure better than Durian which is another love of mine for those adventurous people out there.

Product retails for
I bought it for RM6 per pitcher plant depending on size.

FOOD REVIEW ON JIANG KANG SEAFOOD RESTAURANT KUANTAN MALAYSIA

Hi,

It has been long since I updated any travelling and food review.  Here is a review on one of the most famous place to eat in Kuantan and some photos around Kuantan, Malaysia.

Kuantan is a city in Pahang, Malaysia.  It has many theme cafes and restaurants to visit but since I was just there for a moment, I didn't managed to do much other than shop and eat.

Here is a food review on the Jiang Kang Seafood Restaurant Kuantan, Malaysia which house one of the Top 10 chicken rice in Kuantan.  I didn't eat the chicken rice actually but there are other food that I ate here.

So, here is the photos of the Kuantan,Malaysia trip.

Kuantan,Malaysia

The views from most of the trip to to Kuantan, Malaysia. Majority of the road you will notice something like this.  It is jungle where you could find wild life there so not recommended to go in.

Here is the curry mee stall inside the Restaurant. It is at the end corner of the restaurant.

It is RM5.50 for this huge bowl of curry noodles.  It is totally worth it because I couldn't finish it because there is so much inside the noodles.  3 huge pieces of fish tofu skin slices, one big tofu, a lot of char siew (pork) and one huge ping pong size pork ball.  There is a lot of noodles and not the typical little few strands of what I mostly get in other places.  The ingredients are fresh and of good quality.  I was too stuff to be even walked because it is just so filling.  The curry is also great with the fragrant of spices and coconut milk.  I really recommend checking it out.

If you see that face of mine,  you would know why I am so shocked.  There is prices stated on the board in Chinese for the drinks at the stalls.  All I could say is the drinks are just too expensive. Seriously RM2.90 for Milo at a Chinese restaurant is too shocking for me. Normally it is price at RM1.80 at most.  I do not recommended to order drinks here. It is not really worth to order the drinks at the cup is small and very expensive.
You can just top the money and eat something really fulfilling than water which will just bloat you away.  I mean just the cheapo in me saying things like this. 😎

The portion is not that big but the quality of the Fried Kueh Teow stall is really good here. There plenty of prawns which are cleaned properly, fresh and delicious.  The bean sprouts are cooked to perfection as I eat it. Normally I don't eat bean sprout as most people do not cook it properly but the one in this Fried Kueh Teow stall is just so good.  It is worth the price of RM6 as prawn is very expensive and having it so many inside this fried kueh teow makes it worth it. I asked not to include the cockles as I don't eat them. The portion is bigger than what I normally get in Chinese restaurant.  I would recommend it for sure.

Berjaya Kuantan Mall, Malaysia
Berjaya Megamall, Kuantan
Berjaya Megamall Kuantan is one of the malls in Kuantan, Malaysia. It is really small actually.  I think most people actually go to the East Coast Kuantan Malls which is 5minutes from this mall.  The three malls are all near each other actually.

House in Kuantan
Here is picture of one of the type of house in Kuantan.  This is the house that they build on their own land.  This kind of houses are mostly for those that could afford their own land.  Houses in big cities are mostly condominium, apartments, semi detached or bungalow and are not like this.   No we do not live on trees.

Here is the end of the trip out of Kuantan, Pahang Malaysia. The word "Daulat Tuanku" is a prayer that the country will continue on being blessed by the Sultan.  Now, when we see this, it means we are out of that particular states.
Hope you enjoy my short travel log.  Let me know if you like something like more.😊

TRAVEL REVIEW ON MELANG INN HOTEL, KUALA PILAH, NEGERI SEMBILAN, MALAYSIA

Hi,

I stayed in Melang Inn, Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia and I think that maybe I should write about it since I have realised that I have a lot of pictures for it.  Most of the time we have to stay somewhere especially travelling and this hotel does seems to be popular with visitors.

Breakfast

The price for Melang Inn Hotel is quite affordable since for three person, it only cost RM150 with breakfast for two.  You will need to pay deposit of Rm100 which will be returned upon checking out so no worries about it.  They are also free wifi available for usage.

Melang Inn Hotel does have a small area for people that like to take photos with fish pond and fishes.  The room is clean with open cupboard which most people prefers now.  The room is clean and comfortable with showering products provided in the shower room and towels.  There is also a built in hair dryer.

The bathroom comes with hair dryers and shower that is safe since it comes from the main source.  It is just that the water is not warm enough. I think it is probably some people have kids scalded themselves since they turn to the left while showering.

There are ceramic cups, coffee, kettle and mineral water to have some coffee.  As for breakfast, the front desk will let you choose one out of the two menus. the menus depends on the day.  I chose a curry noodles and waffle.  Honestly, I prefer the waffle with chocolate sauce.  It is just that the waffle doesn't come with the choice of sauce.  The curry noodles is not warm enough and the portion is quite small.  Well, can't expect much when one only pay RM150.  Normally place with that price do not provide breakfast at all so no complain here.

Overall, I will come again to Melang Inn Hotel if I need to stay here again because of the great service and nice clean place.
